Biography
Crawford School of Public Policy
I am a leading academic expert specializing in Indo Pacific security.
I originally trained as a lawyer and practiced in corporate law for around 20 years in Washington DC, New York, London, Paris and Sydney, including as a partner in a major Sydney law firm.
Since 2006, I have built an international reputation in the field of strategic and security studies. I currently hold appointments as Senior Research Fellow with the National Security College and Distinguished Research Fellow with the Australia India Institute, University of Melbourne.
My work has considerable policy impact. I am a frequent speaker at international security conferences throughout the region and act as an Australian delegate to several major 1.5 Track security and defence dialogues. I am consulted by policy makers in the Australian and US governments.
I have a very active research agenda, currently focusing on India-China maritime security interactions; China’s role in the Indian Ocean region; and Indian strategic affairs.
