Biography

Professor Daniel Ho is a Registered Professional Building Surveyor and Fellow Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), as well as Honorary Fellow and Founding Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Facility Management (HKIFM). He is an Authorized Person and Registered Inspector registered under the Buildings Ordinance (Cap. 123).

Professor Ho’s research interests include the assessment of building quality and performance and facility management. He initiated the Building Health & Hygiene Index (BHHI) research during the outbreak of SARS in March 2003, which has been extended further to cover building safety and conditions. The practical aspects of the assessment schemes also have a bearing on urban renewal and maintenance management of buildings. Professor Ho’s work has attracted media attention, and he has taken part in a number of press conferences, TV documentaries, and road shows, as well as newspaper special features.

Professor Ho has co-authored five books and has contributed to chapters of several other publications. As P.I., he has received a number of research grants from the RGC and external bodies. Professor Ho has published papers in the areas of building quality and performance assessment, sustainable development and heritage, facility management benchmarking, development control, and the durability of building materials.

Professor Ho has served on various government committees, councils, and boards of professional institutions. Government panels served included the Authorized Persons’ and Registered Structural Engineers’ Disciplinary Board Panel, Inspectors Registration Committee Panel, Appeal Tribunal Panel (Building), Appeal Board Panel (Town Planning), Real Estate Services Training Board, etc. He served as HKIFM President in 2002-03 and as Chair of the Hong Kong Board of the RICS in 2013-14, as well as Board of Education, Research Committee, Building Surveying Divisional Council, Planning & Development Divisional Council, of the HKIS. Professor Ho was the Head of the Department of Real Estate and Construction from 1 January 2006 to 28 February 2009.
