Biography

Cynthia received her BPhil and DPhil Degrees from the University of Oxford.  She joined the Manchester Philosophy Discipline Area in October 2011, having previously been Professor of Philosophy at Queen''s University Belfast (2005-2011) and at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (1998-2005).  Prior to this, she was lecturer/senior lecturer/reader in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Manchester. Cynthia has held the Belle van Zuylen Distinguished Visiting Professorship at the University of Utrecht and has held visiting professorships at Rutgers and Columbia Universities and visiting scholar positions at the Rockerfeller Foundation Residential Study and Conference Centre, Bellagio, and the Humanities Institute, University of Connecticut. She has been the grateful recepient of grants and awards for research projects from the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund, and the Mind Association.  She is a member of the editorial board of several journals including the Australasian Journal of Philosophy and is a member of the AHRC peer review panel.
