Biography

After serving on the faculties of Georgia Tech and the University of Virginia, Curt Tompkins was appointed Chair of the IE Department at West Virginia University in 1977, and in 1980 was appointed Dean of Engineering at WVU. In 1991 he became President of Michigan Technological University, and in 2004 was appointed a Senior Executive Service Officer in the U.S. Department of Transportation. He was Director of the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (2004-2007) and Director of the University Transportation Centers Program (2007-2011). He and his wife, Kathy, are retired in Newark, Delaware. Their children live in Washington, DC (Robert), New York City (Joseph) and Cleveland, Ohio (Rebecca).
