Craig LaMay is an associate professor and a faculty associate at Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research; former editorial director of the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center and editor of Media Studies Journal; and a former newspaper reporter.
His essays and articles have appeared in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Newsweek, Federal Communications Law Journal, Health Policy, Communications and the Law, and many other places.
He is author or co-author of several books, among them Measures of Press Freedom and Media Contributions to Development: Evaluating the Evaluators, with Monroe Price and Susan Abbott (Peter Lang, 2011); Institutional Failures: Duke Lacrosse, Universities, the News Media and the Legal System, with Howard Wasserman (Ashgate, 2011); Inside the Presidential Debates, with Newton Minow (University of Chicago, 2008); Exporting Press Freedom: Economic and Editorial Dilemmas in International Media Assistance (Transaction, 2006); Journalism and the Problem of Privacy (Erlbaum, 2003); Democracy on the Air, with Ellen Mickiewicz, Donald Browne and Charles Firestone (Duke, 2000); To Profit or Not to Profit: The Commercial Transformation of the Nonprofit Sector, with Burton Weisbrod (Cambridge, 1998); and Abandoned in the Wasteland: Children, Television and the First Amendment, with Newton Minow (Hill & Wang, 1995).
LaMay’s research and professional interests are media development in democratizing and post-conflict societies; comparative speech law; commercial and public broadcast regulation; and sport as a social institution. He has a B.A. from Brown University, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
