Biography

Cranfield School of Management

Background

I successfully led international teams of scientists in the UK, Kenya, Syria and Nepal to deliver projects funded by DEFRA, DFID and EU whilst working at the Universities of Nottingham and Reading.

From 2005-2011 I was PhD Programme Director at Cranfield School of Management overseeing the graduation of more than 60 PhD students. I provided strategic direction for the improvement of research supervision and academic processes, and diversified the supporting income streams. He prepared accreditation documents for ESRC, EQUIS and AACSB.

Qualifications:

MA Agricultural and Forest Sciences - University of Oxford

PhD Agricultural Botany - University of Reading

MBA - University of Reading

DBA Higher Education Management - University of Bath (Awarded Mawditt prize for the best thesis)

Current activities

My research interests focus on the role of formal and informal structures in influencing inter-organizational and inter-personal relations. Current and recently completed projects include:

Networks of influence: practicing safety leadership in low hazard environments (sponsored by IOSH). This investigates the roles and practices of safety leaders and the influence of social networks on their effectiveness.

Social networks for servitiization (sponsored by EPSRC). This explored the role of networks in innovation in manufacturing SMEs.

How do they manage? Study of the realities of healthcare management. This includes a study of the role of formal and informal networks on change agent praxis (sponsored by NHS NIHR-SDO)

Research into the leadership and HRM needs of INGOs (sponsored by ELHRA).

With more than 50 articles I regularly publish in high quality academic journals. I regularly presents at international conferences. I am an enthusiastic supervisor of doctoral students, with 7 successful completions. These have included (i) the governance of sustainable supply networks, (ii) philanthropy in higher education, and (iii) evaluating the performance of research management in universities. I am currently supervising 3 doctoral students investigating (i) the role of competition and collaboration between business units in multi-business organizations, (ii) exiting strategies for weaker actors in buyer-supplier networks, (iii) leadership of post-merger integration.

I spearheaded the University''s REF2014 submission to UoA19 (Business and Management Studies).

Clients

A number of organizations including Waitrose, Aviva, Pentland Brands, Travis Perkins, Debenhams, The HomeRetail Group, Oxfam and a number of county councils have expressed interest in participating in my current research into safety leadership. My research into the management of organizational change following extreme events or serious incidents has been in collaboration with Bedford Hospital and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Research with Harrewelle investigated the coordination of temporary project teams. Executive Education programmes have been conducted with Oracle.
