Prof. Soo-Jin Chua graduated with a B.Eng (Hons) from the University of Singapore in 1974 and his PhD from the University of Wales, United Kingdom in 1977.

In 1978, he worked for the Standard Telecommunications Labs, Harlow, UK, as a research scientist.

In 1981, he spent a year at the Fraunhofer Institute of Semiconductor Technology, Munich under a German Exchange Scholarship (DAAD).

He was a Visiting Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1988 and of the British Council in 1990.

Currently, he is Professor in the Depart ment of Electrical Engineering, National University of Singapore, Principal Scientist in the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and Principal Investigator in SMART. He was Deputy Director of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) from 1999 – 2014, Executive Deputy Director, IMRE from 2004- 2010, Assistant Director of the Institute of Microelectronics from 1991- 1995.and Director of the Centre for Optoelectronics, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, NUS from 1990 - 2010.

His research area is in Semiconductor Optoelectronics and has published over 400 papers in international journals and filed 34 patents, several of which have been commercialized. He has published an undergraduate textbook on Mathematical Physics (MacMillan, 1996) together with Prof Ghatak (IIT, Delhi), Co-editor with Prof Li Baojun (Zhong San University, China) on Optical Switches, Woodhead Publishing, a book chapter on “ZnO Nanostructures and Thin Films Grown in Aqueous Solution: Growth, Defects and Doping”, Chua Soo Jin, Tay Chuan Beng and Tang Jie, Chapter 5 in Handbook of Zinc Oxide and Related Materials (Edt. Zhe Chuan Feng), Taylor & Francis, 2012 and a book chapter on “Epitaxial Lift off of GaN Films”, Zang Keyan and Chua Soo Jin, Handbook of Optical Microcavities; Pan Stanford Publishing Ltd

Prof Chua is Sr. member of IEEE and OSA. He served as Chairman of IEEE, Singapore Chapter from 1984 to 1986 and as Chairman of Education Committee, IEEE Region 10 from 1987 to 1988.

He has received a number of awards for research and teaching and has consulted extensively for industry in the field of semiconductor optoelectronics.

His pastimes are playing badminton, walking for exercise, listening to music and singing. He is exposed to all faiths but has a strong inclination towards Buddhism.
