ACADEMIC POSITION:

Professor of Anesthesiology and Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany

BACKGROUND:

Professor Werner received his medical degrees at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, Germany in 1986. He subsequently completed his residency at the Department of Anesthesiology, University-Hospital Hamburg Eppendorf, Germany in 1993. Professor Werner extended his training with a neuroanesthesia research fellowship at the Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center, Chicago, IL, USA in 1989 and 1990 which was the basis for his professoral thesis related to monitoring of cerebral blood flow. In 1996 he was appointed as Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice-Chairman at the Department of Anesthesiology, Technische Universität München, Germany. In 2004 Professor Werner was appointed to Professor of Anesthesiology and Chairman at the Department of Anesthesiology, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany with responsibility for clinical anaesthesiology, critical care medicine, emergency medicine and pain medicine. He additionally served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

SOCIETY POSITIONS:

Professor Werner is Past President of the German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI), a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He is Past President of the German Neuroanesthesia Research Group and the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC), a subspecialty group of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Professor Werner chairs the state section Rheinland-Palatina of the German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care and served to the European Society of Anesthesiologists (ESA) as a council member and as a representative of the National Anaesthetic Societies Committee (NASC).

PUBLICATIONS:

Professor Werner is authored, co-authored and collaborated on over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journal along with several book chapters. He also co-editored the major German anesthesia textbook.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

His science is related to the quantification of anesthetic effects on cerebral blood flow and metabolism and the regulation of cerebral blood flow. In addition, his research addresses the pathophysiology and mechanisms of neuronal injury associated with cerebral ischemia, resuscitation, neurotrauma, and postoperative cognitive deficits including the identification of neuroprotective treatments.
