Chris Procter

I have worked at the University of Salford since 1991 with a one year gap in 1999-2000 based at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. I have had substantial involvement in teaching and the organisation of teaching, particularly in Project Management and Professional Development. I have a broad range of research, particularly pedagogical research, research in Project Management and in Information Systems, with approximately 30 publications and over 600 citations. I have substantial experience in the management of funded projects. I have had responsibility for managing placements and the development of employability skills, and thus collaboration with numerous partners, throughout my time at Salford. TEACHING My main teaching is in Professional Development. This involves the management of a module undertaken by all Business School undergraduates. I also have a substantial role in teaching Project Management both to undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as providing training on a commercial and consultancy basis. I have been nominated twice by the University of Salford for the Higher Education Academy (HEA) National Teaching Fellowship Scheme and (in 2017) I led the team that was nominated for the HEA Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence. I was awarded the Vice Chancellors Distinguished Teaching Award in 2012, the University Students Union Teaching Award 2014 and the Vice Chancellors Distinguished (team) Teaching Award in 2017. I am the co-ordinator of undergraduate placements in Salford Business School. Undergraduate students take part in one year paid ‘sandwich’ placements between the second and final year of their courses. This involves substantial liaison with many stakeholders and management of supervision and assessment which is to a very high standard. I have directed a number of employability projects to value > £1m including the University of Salford contribution to the 'Unite with Business' project, which provided assistance to over 1,700 SMEs in the North West and was the largest project of its type in the UK: http://www.unitewithbusiness.co.uk/. A number of these projects, sourced through the European Social Fund, have assisted both students and businesses not traditionally involved with Higher Education. I supervise students at BSc, MSc and PhD level. 11 students whom I have supervised have successfully completed their PhDs since 2004. I currently supervise 3 doctoral students: 1 in Project Management, 1 in Employability and I in Information Systems research. I have worked as external examiner/ assessor at the following Universities/ Colleges: Greenwich, Huddersfield, Kent, Liverpool John Moores, Manchester College/ Open University, Newcastle, Newport, Surrey, Ulster, Upper Hutt, UWE, Westminster. RESEARCH INTERESTS My research interests lie first and foremost in the practice of teaching and learning. I am influenced by the social constructivist approach, which is concerned with exploring how to enable students to construct their own knowledge through their experience. My research explores how to enable effective learning in practice. Assessment, peer to peer & Teaching Assistant support, placements, agile and blended learning are all tools/ experiences to facilitate this which are discussed in publications linked to below. I was co-chair for the Education in a Changing Environment Conference www.ece.salford.ac.uk in 2009 and 2011 whose objective was the publication and dissemination of innovations in Higher Education practice. I also have a long term interest in research into project management and also in Information Systems, particularly in e-commerce as highlighted below.
