The Role of Organizational Risk Propensity and Stakeholders on The Performance of New Product Development Programs

In today’s competitive landscape, developing and launching new products quickly and in a cost effective manner is critical. Consequently, companies require well planned and managed new product development (NPD) programs. The decision regarding the level and form of investment in the new product development (NPD) program may be influenced by both internal and external forces. Based on survey responses from 126 plant managers, the results of this study suggest that organizational risk propensity influences the level of investment in NPD teams and technology/R&D whereas the high-pressure stakeholders, such as customers and competition, were found to influence only the investments in technology/R&D. Low-pressure stakeholders, such as suppliers, governments and NGOs, were not significantly related to investments. The results also suggest that when managers increase the investment in NPD teams, the time-to-market increases and the NPD costs decrease. When managers increase the investment in technology/R&D, the NPD costs decrease.

Understanding Employee Performance Through Statistical Process Control

Performance appraisals, as part of performance management systems, are an important aspect of human resource management. The objective of this study is to explore different types of variation that create disparities in employee performance. Important concepts about variation are reviewed and specific applications of these concepts are provided for the case of performance appraisals. The study covers discussions on the importance of managers recognizing the difference between common cause and special cause variation as well as employee-controlled vs. management-controlled variation in employee performance, the issues to consider in eliminating variation, and the challenges of making effective decisions in the presence of variation. In addition, tools are provided to help managers recognize different types of variation.
