Biography
BSc (Hons) Chemistry at University of Wales Institute of Science & Technology (Awarded a 3 month scholarship to undertake research at Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, USA).
PhD (MRC studentship) in Biochemistry at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London (PhD supervisor Professor Howard Morris, FRS)
Followed by 5 years working in the pharmceutical industry after which time I re-entered academia taking up a postdoctoral position at UMIST in the Department of Biomolecular Sciences.
In 1997 I was awarded a 5 year British Heart Foundation Basic Science Lectureship during which I started working on structural studies of the voltage-gated calcium channel, one of the key proteins involved in regulating muscle excitation contraction-coupling. In 2003 I was awarded a further 5year Basic Science Lectureship Award from the British Heart Foundation and appointed to a Lectureship at UMIST. During this time my group reported the first, and to-date only, 3D structure for the cardiac calcium channel. Upon the merger of UMIST with the Victoria Univeristy of Manchester to form the University of Manchester I transferred into the Cardiovascular Group in the School of Medicine. I am currently a Reader in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
I have been awarded a 5 year BHF Programme Grant (2011 - 2016).
