Biography
Harvard Medical School
Angela DePace joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School in 2008, where her laboratory investigates the mechanism and evolution of gene expression in animals — fundamental biology with implications for personalized medicine. Her research group uses high resolution imaging and mathematical modeling to investigate gene expression during early development of fruit fly embryos. Dr. DePace is also the founding Faculty Director of the Scientific Citizenship Initiative, which aims to empower scientists to collaboratively engage with and lead their communities and society, and to facilitate a cultural shift in academia to enable and value engagement of scientists at all career stages.
Dr. DePace received her bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale College, and her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco. She was a Helen Hay Whitney postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. DePace teaches scientific communication and co-authored the book “Visual Strategies: A Practical Guide to Graphics for Scientists and Engineers”. She is widely recognized for her commitment to mentoring and career development for graduate students, and has shared her methods through invited seminars, a popular article, and an online course offered by iBiology. She has received an NSF CAREER award in acknowledgement of her innovative research and teaching.
