Research & Teaching Interests
Professor Bird has spent the past 20 years researching the challenges facing today''s global leaders. He is currently researching a global leadership typology that allows for more effective understanding of the myriad roles global leaders take on. He teaches courses on Becoming a Global Manager and Managing the International Assignment.
Industry & Academic Experience
Prior to joining Northeastern University, Allan Bird was the Eiichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Professor of Japanese Studies and Director of the International Business Institute in the College of Business Administration, University of Missouri-St. Louis. He was also director of the College’s International MBA program. He previously held positions at California Polytechnic State University (where he headed the Global Strategy and Law Area) and New York University and has been a visiting professor/researcher at Columbia University, Monterey Institute of International Studies, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Rikkyo University (Japan) Osaka International University (Japan) and Japan’s National Self Defense Academy. Since 2001, Allan also serves as President of The Kozai Group, Inc., an international consulting firm focused on assessing and developing global leadership potential. He serves on the boards of several organizations in Europe, North America and Japan. Some of the companies he has worked with include AT&T, Coca Cola, Ernst & Young, Fujitsu, GE, IBM, Molex, Monsanto, Nippon Express, Riso, Sharp and Watchmark.
Services to the Profession
His professional service includes tenures as President of the Association of Japanese Business Studies, as well as lengthy service on the Association’s Executive Committee. In the Academy of Management, he was a former chair of the Careers Division and has served on the Executive Committee of the International Management Division. In the Academy of International Business he has served multiple times as a Track Chair. He was a key architect and founding member of the International Organization Network (ION), a network of academics and managers from around the world committed to increasing the quality and impact of research on people and their effectiveness in international organizations. He was also a key architect, founding member and head of the Consortium for Undergraduate International Business Education, a collaborative effort by more than 40 universities.
