Biography
Alfred R. (Fred) Light has been a member of the law faculty at St. Thomas University since 1989 and was granted Emeritus faculty status in 2019. Professor Light has recently taught courses in Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Environmental Law, and Legislation and Regulation. He also served as Interim Dean at St. Thomas Law from 1993-94. He previously taught in the Center for Public Service at Texas Tech University.
As a teacher and scholar in both law and political science, he has published a number of books and articles in the areas of federalism and intergovernmental relations, constitutional law, and environmental law. He has also practiced law with the international law firm of Hunton and Williams.
Professor Light is active in various bar associations and currently serves on the Local Arrangements Committee for the ABA Annual Meeting for the Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER). From 2003-06, he was principal investigator on a grant to St. Thomas University from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency entitled, “Risk Communication in Community Participation: Comparing Regional Programs in South Florida” and recently served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Climate Change Officers. He is also on the Board of Advisor’s for BBNA’s Toxics Law Reporter, is a LEED Green Associate and a Certified Sustainability Manager.
