Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies

Alexander Bick is Associate Director and Fellow at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs and Adjunct Lecturer in International Development at Johns Hopkins SAIS. His research focuses on international security, European imperialism, and the history of political economy. He is currently completing a book manuscript, “Governing the Free Sea,” a study of strategic decision-making within the board of directors of the Dutch West India Company in the mid-seventeenth century. Dr. Bick has taught at Barnard College and is the recipient of several prestigious academic fellowships and awards, including Phi Beta Kappa, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies, a Fulbright Fellowship, the Robert McKenzie Memorial Prize, and the Brill Fellowship at the Scaliger Institute. He has published in the Erasmus Journal of Philosophy and Economics, Foreign Policy, and War on the Rocks. Dr. Bick received his BA in political science from the University of Chicago, an MSc in economic history and Diploma in economics from the London School of Economics, and a PhD in history from Princeton University.

Before coming to SAIS, Dr. Bick served in the Obama administration as Director for Syria at the National Security Council and as a member of the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff. He previously was a Presidential Management Fellow in the State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations and a researcher in the British Parliament. He has also worked and consulted for The Carter Center, where he directed international election observation missions in Liberia and Libya and advised on diplomatic initiatives related to Syria.
