Wagner Graduate School of Public Service

Dr. Abu S. Shonchoy is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE) JETRO, Japan and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) at The University of Tokyo.

Prior to joining IDE-JETRO, he worked for Australian National University, University of New South Wales and University of Technology Sydney in Australia as a lecturer. He also worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington DC, USA, during the period of 2007–2008. Dr. Shonchoy is an applied economist with a focus on evidence-based policy research. His current research interests are on financial inclusion, skill training, infrastructure, and education. He is currently conducting several field experiments (RCTs) in Bangladesh and in India. He has published papers in international peer-reviewed journals, such as the World Bank Economic Review, World Development and  Journal of Development Studies. He was awarded the Albert Berry Prize at the Canadian Economic Association (CEA) Conference for the best Paper in Development Economics by a Junior Scholar in 2016. He recently published an edited book titled "Seasonality and Micro-credit" from Springer.

Dr. Shonchoy graduated from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a B.Sc. (Honors) in Economics, a Master’s degree in Economic Policy from the Australian National University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
