About the course

This course is to provide the underpinning knowledge to enable supervisors to meet the ‘safe system of work’ in HSSE, competence standard, at the skills level –Competence Assurance of HSSE Critical positions.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the delegates will be able to:

  • Apply appropriate tools to develop a safe system of work (e.g. JHA, PTW) for complex or non-routine tasks
  • Monitor effectiveness and amend, if necessary, the controls in operation to maintain a safe system of work
  • Work with other disciplines to establish key arrangements for safe systems such as isolation, access and mechanical aids
  • Review and evaluate work plans to address worksite HSSE hazards and improve risk management using the hierarchy of controls
  • Conduct effective site safety checks and audits
  • Identify potential or actual changes and assess their effects on HSSE risks and implement necessary controls
  • Provide advice on personal safety controls for regulatory compliance
  • Provide coaching on safe systems of work tools and techniques
  • Recall the supervisor’s role in assuring work is conducted in a safe manner

Day 5

  • Specific activities included in this course:
  • Identify, assess and record workplace hazards
  • Identify the controls necessary to ensure that work can be undertaken with risk at ALARP
  • Implement safe work systems e.g. JHA, PTW, UAA, RO3
  • Manage interfaces with concurrent work activities to avoid conflicts
  • Conduct site safety checks and audits

Who should attend

This course is intended primarily for company and contractor supervisors who are responsible for safety at the worksite, Managers of worksite supervisors who are responsible for setting safety standards, providing the resources to meet the standards, monitoring day to day activities to confirm that the standards are being met. Also, the course is suitable to all safety representatives, and all staff that carries out HSE audits, inspections, incident reviews, task risk assessments or, advise line staff on HSE matters.
