Professor Zhang is Ph.D. Supervisor at the Department of International Economics and Trade, Chief Expert of Research Base for Jiangsu Provence International Economic Decision-making Consultation. He is also a recipient of Special Government Allowances chosen by the State Council.

He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Northwest University and Xiamen University, a member of Nanjing People's Government Advisory Committee, and editorial board and academic committee member of several important academic journals (including World Economy, International Trade Issues, World Economic Studies, Political Economic Review, World Economic and Political Forum, Business Economics and Management and Journal of Chinese Economic and Foreign Trade Studies).

Professor Zhang has been a senior visiting scholar at Nagoya Gakuin University (Japan), Harvard University (U.S.), and National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and won several awards, including the First Prize for Nanjing University Outstanding Teaching Quality Results, the First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences from Jiangsu Province, An Zijie Award for Outstanding Achievement in International Trade Research, and National Excellent Returnees Award. He was twice selected as Nanjing University My Favorite Teacher by students.
