Young Kim

Associate Professor at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

Biography

I am an associate professor in the School of Business Administration (SBA), Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), located in Ulsan, South Korea. I obtained PhD in organization/economic sociology from Stanford University and worked as a faculty member at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School for eight years before joining the UNIST SBA in 2014. My academic backgrounds are in organization and economic sociology and I study the empirical phenomena that are associated with organization, management, business strategy, and innovation. My research field belongs to the domains of organization theory, strategic management, and technology & innovation management. (see the divisions and interest groups in the Academy of Management)

My research aims to understand the organization and strategy from the integrative viewpoints. Specific research topics include: the process of performance feedback in which a firm’s past performance shapes its subsequent strategy; the association between human resource management (esp., for engineers and/or managers) and corporate strategy; the process of technological innovation inside and outside of corporate and research organizations; the changes of business model and corporate strategy in response to digital transformation. My main research method is to collect data (usually, at the firm-level or technology-level) and employ statistical analyses to test the plausible hypotheses from organization/strategy theories. My publications appeared in academic journals including the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Management Science, and Research Policy.
