Biography

Professor CHOO Yoo Sang is currently Adjunct Professor in National University of Singapore and Director (Special Duties) in Technology Centre for Offshore & Marine, Singapore (TCOMS).

He has served as the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair Professor in National University of Singapore from 2009 to 2017. He was the 106th President of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) in 2008, and was IMarEST’s first President from Asia.

He studied in University of Manchester and obtained his B.Sc. Hons (1st Class) in 1977, M.Sc. in 1979 and Ph.D. in 1981. He started work in 1979 in the research group in Manchester on seabed-based deepsea production system concept and continued as Research Associate before joining VO Offshore (UK) in 1982 as Senior Structural Engineer to design the BS8000 semi-submersible vessel and other offshore projects. After serving as Senior Structural Engineer from 1984 in McDermott South East Asia for four years, he joined the National University of Singapore in 1987 as CAD/CAM Specialist, and served as Director of CAE/CAD/CAM Centre from 1995 to 1999 before his transfer to Department of Civil Engineering in 1999.

Professor Choo was Founding Director of the Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering (CORE) when it was set up in NUS in 2003, and then served as Director (Research) of CORE. He is Chairman of Singapore Mirror Committee for International Standards Organisation TC67/SC7 Offshore Structures, member of International Institute of Welding Sub-commission XV-E: Tubular Structures, member of Lloyd’s Register Offshore Technical Committee and member of IMarEST’s Professional Affairs and Education Committee (PAEC).

Professor Choo has received a number of international and national recognitions, including Lifetime Achievement Award – Maritime Academics (in recognition of the sterling contributions and accomplishments in R&D and Education in Offshore & Marine Engineering) in 2009, Lifetime Achievement Award in Marine & Offshore Engineering (2021) and two ISOPE Awards for his significant contributions to the International Society of Offshore & Polar Engineers. He and his research team have won best paper and engineering achievement awards, including Stanley Gray Award 2001 from IMarEST (UK), Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2003 and 2015 presented by IES (Singapore), James Watt Medal 2005 from ICE (UK), and Stanley Gray Medal 2005 from IMarEST (UK). He received the Kurobane Award in 2015 from the International Institute of Welding (IIW) Sub-commission XV-E for his outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of tubular structures. He has been invited to deliver keynote papers or presentations in many international conferences and symposia.

Professor Choo has served in many scientific and technical committees of international organizations and conferences, and hosted as Chairman or Co-Chairman for some of the conferences and symposia. He served as President of Singapore Structural Steel Society from 1992 to 1994. He was in the Board of Directors, International Society of Offshore & Polar Engineers (ISOPE) during 2000 and 2002, and President of Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore from 2012 to 2015. He was Guest Professor in Delft University of Technology (2000 to 2012), University of Southampton (2011) and Seoul National University (2014 to 2015). He was Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished Visiting Fellow in University of Oxford in 2014. He has served as member of Editorial Board for Journal of Marine Structures, International Journal of Ships and Offshore Structures, Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology, Journal of Ocean Science & Technology and International Journal of Ocean Systems Engineering.

Professor Choo was conferred the Honorary Fellowship of Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS) in 2004 in recognition of his technical expertise, outstanding contribution and development in Offshore and Structural Engineering. He is Fellow of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (UK) and Royal Institution of Naval Architects (UK), Chartered Engineer (UK) and Chartered Marine Engineer (UK).

Professor Choo has served as technical consultant or expert witness in major offshore projects, and initiated or participated in international joint industry projects. He has served as Principal Investigator in a number of R&D projects, including the Structural Integrity Management Programme on Offshore Structures and Joint Industry Project on Grouted Joints. He has also served as panel member for IMarEST’s PAEC to accredit university degree programmes in China, Malaysia and Singapore.

Professor Choo has been appointed as Distinguished Visiting Professor in Tsinghua University in China from July 2022.
