Weilei (Stone) Shi is Professor of Managerial Practice at the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB). Dr. Shi graduated from Katz School of Business, University of Pittsburgh with his Ph.D. in Strategic Management in 2008. Currently, he is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Management Studies. Moreover, he is a member of council at the Shanghai Advanced Institute for Financial Research. Dr. Shi acts as a committee member at Chongqing Liangjiang Research Institute—Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is also a distinguished researcher at Shanghai Institute for Global City—Shanghai Municipal Government Decision Committee. Before joining CKGSB, Dr. Shi was a tenured Professor of Strategy and Doctoral Advisor at Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College-CUNY. Previously, he was also a Professor of Strategy at SAIF-SJTU and was the Academic Co-Director of EMBA/EE/GES programs there. Before that, he was the Academic Director of Executive Education at Antai School of Economics and Management between 2015 and 2019, and Executive Director of DBA Program at Antai between 2017 and 2019.

Dr. Shi worked for Roland Berger Strategy Consultancy–a top notch global strategy consulting firm, in its Shanghai (Great China) office before he entered into academia. During his consulting career, he steered many projects in retail, automobile, and machine cutting tool industries. He specialized in foreign firms’ market entry strategy, M&A and strategic alliance, post M&A integration, organizational restructure, competitive analysis between domestic and foreign firms in China. Currently, Dr. Shi is an entrepreneur advisor for top-tier incubators and he also sits on the board of multiple companies as an independent director.

Areas of Expertise

Professor Shi’s research centers on the interaction between strategy and international management. Specifically, he is interested in examining M&As and alliances from both temporal and network perspectives. He is also an expert in the area of digital transformation strategy and ESG investment. His papers have been published in top tied journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Academy of Management Perspective, Harvard Business Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Harvard Business Review, and CEIBS Review. In the past 10 years, he has published 10 articles in “Financial Times 50” Journals (FT 50).. He is considered a thought leader in the area of mergers & acquisitions and international strategy. His publications also received significant amount of citations from well-known scholars in the field.

Achievements

Professor Shi is currently the Associate Editor of Journal of Management Studies, and is on the Editorial Board of Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Perspective, Global Strategy Journal, and Long Range Planning. He was the Guest Editor of Asia Pacific Journal of Management. He was awarded the Outstanding Reviewer Award in the Academy from 2005 to 2007. His articles also received multiple awards and nominations (Best Paper) from the Academy of Management, Asia Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and Strategic Management Society. He was also the recipient of outstanding research awards from Baruch College-CUNY (including Eugune Lang Research Award and PSC CUNY Research Award). His research also gained significant recognition in China. He frequently contributes articles to Harvard Business Review, CEO & CIO, CEIBS Review, Economic Highlights, Global, and Contemporary Economic Research.

Stone has more than 20 years of teaching, corporate training, and consulting experience. He received high evaluation from his peers and his students. He has taught Strategic Management and Corporate Strategy (in both English and Chinese) at the University of Pittsburgh (U.S.A), Bern University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland), City University of New York (U.S.A), BMI (Lithuania), University of Manchester (U.K.), ESADE Business School (Spain), SKOLKOVO (Russia), St. Gallen University (Switzerland), Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance at Shaghai Jiaotong University and Antai School of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is also the winner of the Best Teaching Award from City University of New York.

He has provided internal training and consultancy for senior leadership teams at companies such as 3M, AstraZeneca, Auchan, Bank of Communications, Bank of Guizhou, BEA, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CASCO, Chiatai, China Continent Insurance, CITIC, DB Schenker, Fresenius Medical Care, ICBC, INESA, KUKA REIS Robotics, Lincomb, Perfetti, PKU Founder Life, SAFE, SAIC, SHAMP, Swire Coca-Cola, SWHY Securities, and Want Want group, and Weifu, to name a few.
