Wei Yang

Dr Wei Yang is an Associate Professor in Global Health and Public Policy and the Director of Institute of Gerontology at King’s College London. Her work focuses on measuring the impacts of social health insurance on inequities in access to care and fairness in financing using longitudinal survey datasets. Wei has published widely in high-impact journals such as Social Science and Medicine, European Journals of Health Economics, China Quarterly, Health Policy and Planning and Journal of Gerontology. Wei holds the Future Research Leader award of Economics and Social Research Council of the U.K. – one of the most prestigious awards to emergent researchers in social science.

Wei is an internationally renowned researcher whose work has had significant policy impacts in the context of health and long-term care in both China and UK. Her work has been frequently cited by the National Health and Family Planning Commissions (China), Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (China), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, and being commissioned by Department of Health and Social Care in the UK. She has been a consultant for various international organisations such as WHO and Population Services International.

Wei has been interviewed by international media, including the Economist, the South Morning Daily (China), De Groene Amsterdammer (the Netherlands), among others. She is a member of the editorial board of Global Health Research and Policy.

Wei completed her PhD in Health Economics and Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, a MPhil in Medical Sociology (Distinction) at National University of Singapore, and BA in Sociology at Fudan University in China.

Wei's current research explores issues relating to efficiency and sustainability in loan-to-cost (LTC) financing in China. She also holds expertise in using cost-effectiveness analysis and decision analytical modelling to evaluate health interventions across population groups, with a focus on cardiovascular diseases among the elderly population.
