His research interests and areas range across labour markets, monetary and fiscal policy, global financial markets and banking, with a focus on public policy.

His doctoral thesis and early research was on labour market aspects of business cycles. His 1990 article traced the puzzle of the sudden post-1981 US-Canada unemployment rate gap back to changes in Canada’s 1971 unemployment insurance legislation (see April 1990 entry on Professor Moorthy’s website, http://economicsperiscope.com/ ). Some of his findings on this issue were cited prominently in the New York Times and covered in depth in the Canadian press. At the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he worked on US economy forecasts in the Economic Projections Division. He has authored and co-authored Federal Reserve Bank of New York memoranda, research studies and reports on monetary policy, on foreign exchange and on financial market developments.

He made two presentations at the BIS (Bank of International Settlements) Asia-Pacific Office in Hongkong. The first was an informal seminar: 'Can Equity Investors Explain the Failure of UIP? Links to News Studies' on February 8, 2017 and a formal presentation on 'Analysing Aspects of India's Demonetisation' on February 9, 2017.

Books:

He has written an e-book Understanding Stagflation: Past and Present published by McGraw Hill India in 2014 (January 2014 website entry, http://economicsperiscope.com/). A revised version of the book is underway.

He is writing a comprehensive textbook titled Macroeconomics: An Integrated, Financial Approach, based on a policy rate approach, for use at the intermediate undergraduate, Masters and MBA levels. Parts of the e-book Understanding Stagflation form a part of the bigger macroeconomics book.

The Table of Contents and Salient Features of both books are outlined in his main website http://economicsperiscope.com/, mainly a chronological list of publications.

Other Publications:

His international and Indian journal publications have been on various topics, notably interest rates and exchange rates, long standing academic debates about the stability of public debt under alternative modes of financing, food prices, inflation measurement and policy for India. His debate in 1995 in the Economic Times with a former Reserve Bank of India Governor culminated in a research study for the RBI in 2000 of India’s public debt, of which he was the principal author. His event study approach paper developed a trading rule to make excess profits based on the monthly US employment report (June 1995, April 1996 and June 2000 website entries, http://economicsperiscope.com/).

He has written for the following newspapers and magazines in India and abroad: The Economic Times, Business Line, Mint, Financial Express, The Far Eastern Economic Review, and The Wall Street Journal, mostly on macroeconomic issues. He also writes on transport policy, and his minor website, http://unclogroads.com/ contains some of his newspaper articles advocating the imposition of a steep revenue neutral Vehicle Area Levy to tackle a wide array of economic problems.
