Uma studied English literature in Delhi University, India and was awarded the BA (hons.), MA and MPhil degrees. Subsequently, she pursued her doctorate in English Literature at the National University of Singapore as an MOE scholar, and was the recipient of the Maurice Baker prize (2013) for best thesis in English literature.

She has taught in India, Indonesia and Singapore since 1988 both at school and college levels. She has also had the opportunity to structure and teach a module for the postgraduate diploma programme at NIE, working with teachers that specialized in teaching English Literature. Additionally, Uma have co-taught modules on humanities with lecturers from MIT and the UOL programmes.

Her second area of specialization is teaching argumentative writing. Uma’s particular strengths in this regard are facilitating group discussions to promote peer learning, stretching student ability via one-to-one consultation, and last but not the least, providing timely and useful feedback on written work.
