Biography

Ueli Maurer is Full Professor of Computer Science and head of the Information Security and Cryptography research group at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science.

He was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on May 26, 1960, and received his degree (with honors) and his Ph.D. degree, both in electrical engineering, from the ETH Zurich in 1985 and 1990, respectively. From 1990 to 1991 he was a DIMACS research fellow at the Department of Computer Science, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ. His research interests include information security, the theory and applications of cryptography, applications like digital signatures, public-key infrastructures, digital payment systems, and e-voting, the management of trust and digital evidence, mathematical security proofs, theoretical computer science, discrete mathematics, and information theory.

He has served extensively as an editor and a member of program committees. Currently he is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cryptology, Editor-in-Chief (with Ronald Rivest) of Springer Verlag''s book series in Information Security and Cryptography, and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). In 1996 he co-founded the annual Zurich Symposium on Privacy and Security.

Maurer holds several patents for cryptographic systems. He serves on several management and scientific advisory boards, including the board of Tamedia AG, a leading Swiss media company. He has co-founded the Zurich-based security software company Seclutions AG.
