Tony Tong is Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship in the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado. Currently he serves as Chair of the Dept. of Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Operations (SEO). His research on strategy, innovation, and globalization examines interfirm relationships (M&As, alliances), multinational enterprises, intellectual property rights (patents), platform markets, and digital business. He has published in Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Nature - Scientific Data, Organization Science, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, among others. His interdisciplinary research has won the 2011 SMS Conference Best Paper Prize, 2020 ICIS Conference Best Short Paper Award (first runner-up), and the 2021 Best Paper Award of the Journal of Management in Engineering. He has been the Principal Investigator of two National Science Foundation Awards. He is a cofounder of the Chinese Patent Data Project.

Professor Tong teaches Strategic Management, Global Strategy, International Business, Entrepreneurship through Acquisition, and Technology & Innovation Management in undergraduate, MBA, Executive, and Ph.D. programs. His teaching has won several awards and recognitions from Colorado, Purdue, Ohio State, and CKGSB. He has published in Harvard Business Publishing several popular case studies of high-tech companies (Apple, Didi, Huawei, Xiaomi). His work on innovation and digital business models also appears in practitioner outlets including Harvard Business Review and California Management Review.

Professor Tong has served on the editorial review boards of AMJ, GSJ, JIBS, JOM, SEJ, SMJ, and SO, and was a coeditor of the Advances in Strategic Management – Real Options Theory. He is currently Program Chair of the SMS’s Corporate Strategy Interest Group and serves on the Executive Committee of the AOM’s Strategic Management (STR) Division. He served on the STR’s Research Committee, organized several Patent Research PDWs at AOM, and was a senior faculty advisor of the STR Managing Your Dissertation Workshop, the STR Junior Faculty Consortium, and the SMS Doctoral Workshop.
