Tom Coveney

Tom Coveney is the Systems Administrator for the Center for Transportation & Logistics. In this role he is responsible for general systems administration for the centers various servers, workstations, and other administrative & research computing devices.

He does web server administration for the various groups under CTL (Including back end database management for their dynamic sites), hardware/software upgrades/installations & maintenance, user account management, user support, and security (Including backup and recovery of user files, and web/file server data). He will help evaluate & integrate new mobile devices for both faculty and staff. He provides software/hardware troubleshooting and diagnosis, and arrange repair for the Center’s computer equipment. He is also available to answer questions, handle problems & general issues for faculty, staff, and students

Prior to joining CTL, Tom worked in the MIT's Information Services and Technology (IS&T), as a part of the Distributed IT Resources (DITR) group. While there he would provide:

• On-site consulting to resolve customer’s problems & enhance their understanding and effective use of information technology.
• Ongoing customer support and systems administration and maintenance in the areas of hardware, software, network systems planning, configuration, installation integration and maintenance;
• Analysis of customer’s existing IT infrastructure and needs, and make recommendations for solutions;
• Management for a wide variety of projects including networking and system upgrades;

He would also act as a liaison & provide technical input to MIT system administrators, department representatives, students, faculty members, vendor partners about new technology & new products.

He also spent time working with both the MIT Windows 2000 Discovery & Delivery Teams. These projects focused on developing deployment options & scenarios, and recommended which of those should & which should not be supported by IS&T, & developing the processes, mechanisms, and resources with which to assist over 180 departments, labs, and centers at MIT in deploying to Windows 2000 Active Directory Domains & Windows Server platforms.

In his 22 years of professional computer experience, he has held positions at multiple universities in the Boston Area, and was a General Partner in his own consulting firm.
