Tom read Modern History at Oxford and Law (Common Professional and Finals Examinations)at the College of Law, before qualifying as a solicitor in 1989 and working at the private client specialist law firm Withers from 1987-1989 and at Freshfields the international corporate law firm from 1989 to 1996, before joining Sotheby’s in 1997. During that time Tom worked in London and Brussels specialising in commercial and anti-trust law, and spent a year on secondment with the Corporate Strategy Department at the UK entertainment corporation, The Rank Organisation plc. Tom was Sotheby's European General Counsel 2000 - 2013 and a Senior Director at Sotheby's until 2016.

Tom served for several years on the Committees of the British Art Market Federation and the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, of which he is now an Honorary Associate. Tom is a member of PAIAM (Professional Advisors to the International Art Market), and Master (2016-17) and a Charitable Trustee for the City Livery Company, The Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars
