Tom Barry

Tom is the Programme Director of the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences that is situated within the Faculty of Social Sciences but which also spans the Faculties of Arts and Sciences. Tom obtained a BSc in Psychology from The University of Warwick (UK) and a MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience at The University of Reading (UK). Tom was then awarded a Doctoral Fellowship by the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO) for his work at the University of Leuven (Belgium) in the mechanisms associated with the treatment of anxiety disorders. Following his doctoral studies, Tom worked as a Visiting Scholar in the Anxiety and Depression Research Centre at the University of California, Los Angeles (US) and then as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London (KCL; UK). During his time at KCL Tom was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the UK's National Institute of Health Research as well as The Institute of Psychiatry's Independent Research Award. Tom maintains a position as a Visiting Researcher at KCL to this day.

In 2017, Tom joined the University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor (Research) where he founded the Experimental Psychopathology Lab. In 2020 Tom was nominated as Rising Star by the Association of Psychological Sciences (APS). Tom's research explores the cognitive, behavioural and biological mechanisms involved in the emergence of mental health problems and their treatment.
