Biography

After his studies of industrial engineering (diploma) at the University of Karlsruhe with exchange semesters at the ETH Zurich (2003), his doctorate (2007) and habilitation (2013) at the TU Munich in Informatics as well as a research stay at IBM Research in New York, he led the research group Corporate Services & Systems as a university professor of the Faculty of Business Administration at the Karlsruher Institute for Technology (KIT) until he came to our Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. His main focus areas is at the intersection of business informatics - business analytics - digital business systems and business models, where he regulary organizes national and international conferences. Furthermore, he leads the area Analytics at the "Gesellschaft für Operations Research" (GOR) since 2014.
From 2012 to 2019, he was also responsible for the area Big Data Science & Service Management as Associate Director at the “Forschungszentrum Informatik” (FZI), and has been Associate Editor for the Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) journal since 2015. Prof. Setzer publishes his research results, besides articles in conference proceedings, in high-ranked business and technology journals, he won several best-paper-awards as well as the INFORMS ISS Design Science Award and acquired several industrial and public foundings for his research.
At the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Prof. Setzer, in a cooperation with the digital foundation center brigk, is committed to actively promoting the digital start-up scene “from university to digital business” in Ingolstadt. Prof. Setzer has been a full member and co-lead of the Mathematical Institute for Machine Learning and Data Science (MIDS) since 2022.
Primary subjects in teaching and research are information management, data science and business analytics with the purpose of integrating and processing heterogeneous company and customer data for analysing and transforming data sets and using them in decision support systems for planning, control and coordination in companies. The professorship addresses current challenges within this realm.
The chair aims at providing our students with modern, practically relevant, and profound theoretical knowledge in an interactive manner. In research, we aim at deriving fundamental methodical and practically relevant contributions at the intersection of information systems - software and system development - analytics and data science - digital business systems and models by means of design-oriented, quantitative/analytical research.
