Harvard Medical School

As Chief Medical Officer, Eappen will lead key initiatives in physician recruitment and retention, medical affairs and patient care. Partnering closely with the Associate Chief Medical Officers, he will focus on developing new clinical care delivery strategies that will significantly improve efficiency, financial outcomes and, most importantly, patient outcomes.

Eappen will lead efforts focusing on integration between Partners and Brigham Health clinicians, pharmacy management, and nurturing a culture of professionalism that extends beyond physicians and nurses to all Brigham and Women’s Hospital staff.

Eappen joined BWH on July 16, 2018, from Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he most recently served as the Chief of Anesthesiology and the Chief Medical Officer. He was previously the Medical Director of the Operating Rooms at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In these roles at the Mass Eye and Ear, he managed the Medical Staff Office and the pharmacy as well as leading the Quality and Patient Experience Programs.

Eappen earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, his MD from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and an MBA from the Yale University School of Management. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Eappen has numerous published articles and is national speaker on the utility of surgical checklist implementation in order to reduce surgical complications, optimizing OR efficiency, and change management. In addition to serving as CMO, Eappen is also an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.
