Biography

Stuart Hanscomb took his degree in philosophy and psychology at Hull University, and wrote his Ph.D. on existential philosophy at Durham University. He has lectured in the Philosophy Department at Durham, and taught both philosophy and psychology at a number of other institutions including City University (London), The City Lit. (London), Birkbeck College, Stirling University, and Edinburgh University. He now teaches philosophy and communication at the University of Glasgow’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries. Current areas of interest and research include the psychology and philosophy of higher education (esp. graduate attributes and authenticity), virtue theory, and critical thinking (in particular the relationship between informal logic and rhetoric). He is author of various book chapters and articles on critical thinking, existential philosophy, and higher education, including ‘The Critical Being of the Liberal Arts Student’ (2007), Teaching Critical Thinking beyond Philosophy’ (2010), and Assessments and the Self: Academic Practice and Character Attributes (2014). He is currently writing a book called Critical Thinking: The basics (Routledge, forthcoming 2016). Dr. Hanscomb has also worked as an academic consultant and trainer for marketing company Mountainview (London) who specialize in the role of emotion and the unconscious in processes of persuasion
