Biography

Harvard Kennedy School

Stephen Krupin has served as a top speechwriter to the President of the United States, Secretary of State, and Senate Majority Leader, and has written for and coached dozens of speakers in politics, business, philanthropy, advocacy, and academia.

He served in the White House as a senior speechwriter to President Obama, as director of speechwriting on Obama’s re-election campaign, and as chief speechwriter to Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. He has worked in the writers’ room and media operation at three Democratic National Conventions and served as a Florida press secretary on President Obama’s 2008 campaign.

As the director of the executive communications practice at the public affairs and political consulting firm SKDKnickerbocker, Stephen partners with C-suite executives, elected officials and advocates to help them achieve their strategic objectives from behind the podium and in front of the camera. He has prepared leaders to inspire audiences on the campaign trail and at commencement ceremonies, promote innovative ideas at the World Economic Forum and South by Southwest, and deliver effective messages on “60 Minutes.” He’s worked with them to frame the fights of our time from the Rose Garden and U.N. Security Council to the Senate floor and the steps of the Supreme Court – and even get a few laughs at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Prior to joining the Harvard Kennedy School as an adjunct lecturer in public policy, Stephen designed and taught the graduate-level speechwriting courses at Georgetown, George Washington, and American universities. He graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, earned a master’s degree from the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, and is a fellow at the Truman National Security Project.
