Smeeta Mishra

Associate Professor at Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar

Biography

I am a communication and media studies faculty with diverse experience teaching courses on managerial communication, news media writing and editing, social media culture and research methods, among others. I also conduct workshops on persuasive communication, public speaking, business presentations, online communication, etc.

I have a Ph.D. from the College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University, New York, and another M.A. from the Centre for Political Studies at JNU.

After spending many years abroad and elsewhere in India, I moved back home recently. I now work as an associate professor at the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. I was formerly associate professor in the Business Ethics and Communication Group at IIM Calcutta. I also worked as assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

My most recent book Digital Cultures (Routledge Focus, 2021) explores “contemporary selfie-taking practices; digital experiences of love, romance and infidelity; sexting rituals; self-tracking habits; strategies used by the Internet famous; and the power of hashtag campaigns and memes in espousing a cause.”

I also co-authored the book Online Communication Strategies for Managers with Prof. M.M. Monippally (ex-IIMA). My research interests include online communication, media representations and gender studies.

Before joining academics, I worked as a journalist. I enjoy the little things in life and love a hearty laugh.
