Biography
Kelley School of Business
My career is anchored by those three commitments. Joining the Compass team at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University is a reflection of those priorities. In my current role I design and teach an innovative course required for all first year students. Each semester I work with 300+ students helping them identify, articulate and execute nuanced interests and values, personal branding, and practical, strategic planning for successful career launches and career management.
Prior to joining the Kelley faculty I was an associate director in Kelley’s Graduate Career Services. I worked with approximately 150 graduate students to achieve something more than just job offers. My goal was to guide students in the process of identifying the work environment in which they would best thrive and developing the leadership styles essential to success in today’s global economy. My efforts produced a successful job acceptance rate of 98% for my students.
My decision to run for U.S. Congress in 2012 was guided by my belief that each of us has the power and responsibility to be an agent for positive change and an advocate for basic human rights. Perhaps it is a byproduct of growing up in a small town of about 500 people or maybe it’s just in my bones having watched parents and grandparents live lives dedicated to helping others. I have 15+ years of experience serving on boards and in executive leadership positions for non-profits such as Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee and Indiana South Central Community Action Program, which provides opportunities for low-income citizens to move toward personal and economic independence. I currently serve on the Monroe County Council and am a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club.
For my work I have received the Bloomington “Emerging Leader Award,” the Nashville (TN) Business Journal, “Women of Influence Award,” and the Nashville (TN) District Dietetic Association “Iris Award.”
