Biography

Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs

I am currently a postdoctoral research associate in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. I research the intersection of political institutions and behavior in American politics. My work focuses particularly on how institutional decision making rules alter the composition of social pressures to drive political behavior and change political outcomes. I have an ongoing interest in how rules governing vote secrecy alter voters' consideration of other political actors' preferences, which I examine in the contexts of Vermont town meetings, Congressional caucus votes, and historical Australian ballot adoption. If you have questions about my research please do not hesitate to email me: scottmg [at] princeton [dot] edu.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of California - San Diego in 2016. Before returning to academia I spent several years as a legislative aide in Washington, DC working for the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. In my free time I enjoy backpacking, fly fishing, skiing, and most other outdoors activities in my home state of Montana.
