Dr. Sam N. Basu has been appointed dean of the Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., following a national search. He was also named a professor in the University’s Department of Economics, Finance and Global Business.
“Dean Basu has distinguished himself as a scholar, an educator, and an entrepreneur,” says Edward Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at William Paterson. “We welcome the broad experience he brings to the University, and we look forward to his leadership of the Cotsakos College of Business.”
Basu, who assumed the post on August 1, previously served as a professor of finance at California State University, East Bay, where he had been a faculty member since 1988. During his tenure at California State, he served as interim dean from 2003-05, and associate dean from 2000-03 of the College of Business and Economics, and as co-director of the Smith Center of Private Enterprise Studies from 1991-1998. Previously, he served as an assistant professor of finance and business economics at the University of Southern California from 1974-79.
Prior to his academic appointments at California State, Basu held various positions in the corporate sector including senior vice president for Merabank in Phoenix and vice president and manager for strategic planning for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. He also was a founding member of Webel Electro-Optics, Inc., a fiber optics company in India.
As the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship for the academic year 2000-2001, Basu lectured throughout India on topics such as economic deregulation and banking deregulation. He is the co-author of Strategic Credit Management of Commercial Banks and his articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Business Horizons, Business Journal, and International Perspectives and the Management Accountant. His areas of expertise include new venture finance, commercial banking and capital markets, and strategic corporate financial management.
Basu earned a bachelor of technology degree from Indian Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Saskatchewan, and a doctorate in business administration from the University of Houston. He is a certified management accountant.
