Biography

Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Agranoff is one of the longest serving faculty members at SPEA. He joined IU in 1980 and continues to be active in research, teaching, and professional service. He specializes in intergovernmental relations and management, public administration, economic and community development, and federalism.

Agranoff''s books and scholarship have garnered national recognition and honors. In 2014, the American Political Science Association selected his 2003 book on government operations for the prestigious Martha Derthick Book award. Collaborative Public Management, co-authored with Michael McGuire, was chosen "for its lasting contribution to the study of federalism and intergovernmental relations." The book was also named the Louis Brownlow Book Award winner by the National Academy of Public Administration. Agranoff is currently finishing a book on the evolution of intergovernmental collaboration. He has applied his award-winning scholarship on the subject to contributions internationally, with positions served in South Africa, Australia, Ukraine, and Spain. Since 1990, Agranoff has been affiliated on a regular basis with the Government and Public Administration Program of the Instituto Universitario Fundacíon Ortega y Gasset in Madrid, Spain.

Agranoff''s number of consultancies in public administration and public service exceeds three dozen. He was a nationally recognized expert on the integration of public human services programs in the 1970''s and 1980''s. Agranoff contributed to the 1981 White House Conference on Aging, and he helped develop the allied services approach within the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (DHEW) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

At SPEA, Agranoff has served in several leadership roles over the years, including director of the Public Affairs and the Public Policy doctoral programs, chair of the Policy and Administration Faculty, and associate dean.
