Aalto University School of Business

I work among specialist issues in bridge, wind and structural engineering. My field of specialisation include studies of wind and other dynamic load effects using numerical and empirical methods (like wind tunnel testing and field measurements). In structural engineering these include static, dynamic and aeroelastic effects; and wind-induced fatigue. Wind effects to humans and vehicles are related to various comfort and hazard issues.
I currently work in Aalto 80 % and as consulting engineer 20 % of office hours. I've been in profession since 1993 and involved in various engineering projects: mainly for signature bridges, tall buildings and other vibration prone structure, that are situated in over 10 different countries. I’m recipient of the Bridge and Tunnel Prize 2004 of Nordic Road Association (NRA); and the IABSE Prize 2007 of International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). I’m chairman of the Finnish group of IABSE and NRA’s Finnish Bridges Technical Committee. I’m member of the Finnish Academy of Technical Sciences. My tasks in Aalto include especially teaching and doing research on bridge engineering. Although first professor of bridge engineering started already 1908 aside with predecessor of Aalto, the Helsinki University of Technology, my doctoral dissertation 2001 was only the 5th in its field inside the university. Towards the future, special issues in signature bridges as well as lifecycle efficiency targets of ordinary bridges request development and exploitation of scientific methods, to which doctoral studies gives the necessary platform.
