Rick Volden

Rick Volden is a clinical psychologist who worked for thirty years as a therapist in private practice before retiring from clinical work in 2020. His specialties included group therapy, working with couples, and men’s issues in therapy. He continues to provide case consultation to colleagues, as well as serving as volunteer staff for a not-for-profit organization that offers intensive group retreats. Volden has also worked as an independent contractor with a healthcare consulting firm specializing in change management, and as a crisis management consultant in a variety of settings. He received his early training and work experience at Ravenswood Community Mental Health Center in Chicago.

At Booth, Volden teaches Interpersonal Dynamics. He has also been an instructor at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, having taught courses in psychotherapy and self psychology. Volden has served as faculty for numerous continuing education offerings in SSA’s Professional Development Program, as well as for other agencies and organizations throughout Chicago.

Volden is a graduate of St. Olaf College, and earned a Master of Arts degree and a PhD from Loyola University Chicago. He is also a Certified Group Psychotherapist and a member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

As a therapist, consultant, and instructor, Volden strives to create an inviting, safe environment in which people can stretch, take risks, and be vulnerable while pursuing personal growth, self-awareness, excellence and connection with others. In meeting people where they are, he aims to help them get to where they want to be.
