Rebecca Martone

Rebecca is an applied marine scientist working to co-create solutions that help conserve our coasts and oceans while supporting people’s livelihoods and cultural connections. Rebecca’s passion for the ocean started on the beaches and salt marshes of the US southeast, but she has fully embraced the rocky coast. Over the past 15-years she has worked on a variety of issues in coastal ecosystems across the west coast of North America, including small-scale fisheries sustainability, cumulative impacts to coastal ecosystems, and monitoring estuarine, intertidal, and kelp forest ecosystems in Baja California, California, and British Columbia. Rebecca received her PhD from Stanford University in biological sciences, did a postdoc at UBC in the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and worked as the Assistant Science Director for Stanford University’s Center for Oceans Solutions. Currently, Rebecca is working with the Province of BC in collaboration with 17 First Nations and the Government of Canada to develop a marine protected area network and implement ecosystem-based management in BC’s Northern Shelf Bioregion (NSB), extending from northern Vancouver Island to the Canada-Alaska Border. Rebecca feels privileged to share her enthusiasm and knowledge about the BC coast and beyond, and to work with the Outer Shores crew to explore and protect the places we love.
