Raul Roman

Background and Education

Raul Roman is the Founder and Executive Director of DAWNING, a social venture devoted to bringing people together to tell stories of global development, social and environmental issues around the world. DAWNING''s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, BBC News, Al-Jazeera, Die Zeit, El Pais, and many other publications. Before DAWNING, Raul co-founded UBELONG, a leading organization in the field of international volunteering and education. By the time Raul exited UBELONG, the organization had mobilized over 8000 volunteers in community development projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. Throughout his career, Raul has served as a consultant for governments, NGOs, multilaterals and foundations in over 30 countries, including the United Nations’ FAO, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. Raul obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in communication and international development at Cornell University. He’s held teaching positions at Cornell, the University of Washington, and the University of Southern California. Since 2008, Raul teaches a course on social science methods in international affairs at SAIS.
