Indian Institute of Management Lucknow

Dr. Prakash Singh is a Professor of Banking at IIM Lucknow where he has been teaching in the Finance and Accounting area since 2006. He is a B.E in Mechanical Engineering from HBTI, Kanpur, MBA from Lucknow University and holds a PhD from BITS, Pilani. He teaches courses related to Commercial Banking, Risk Management and Financing Start-ups. His research interests include Performance and Regulation of Banks, Risk Management in Financial Institutions, Microfinance, and Valuation of Start-ups. His research contributions have been published in various peer reviewed journals including The Journal of Prediction markets, PRAJNAN, South Asian Journal of Management, International Journal of Developmental issues, Vikalpa, International Journal of Financial Services, IUP Journal of Applied Finance, Udyog Pragati etc., among others. He also serves as Independent Director on the Board of NBFC- MFIs and also on advisory Board of UP Power Corporation, PICUP, SIDBI, LMA and many other organizations. He has done various training and consulting assignments with SIDBI, NABARD, UPPCL, PCDF, Indian Army, HUDCO, GAIL, NTPC, BHEL, IRS, Kotak, Maruti, SAIL, MCDEX, ONGC, Indian Railways etc.

He is also the Faculty Convener at SCIFI, an IIM, Lucknow - SIDBI/ DFID sponsored Incubation centre promoting Start-ups in the space of Fintech

Earlier he has worked with Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd (Now Kotak Bank) and Escorts Yamaha Motors Ltd. He has also taught at BITS, Pilani before joining IIM Lucknow.

Research

Prof Singh has published in various national and international journals of repute on issues related to BASEL III adoption, Bank Regulation, Bank Performance, Risk Management in Banks and Financial Institutions, Non-Performing assets and Debt restructuring, Microfinance and Financial Inclusion. Some of the recent articles were published in Journal of Prediction markets, PRAJNAN, South Asian Journal of Management, International Journal of Developmental issues, Vikalpa, International Journal of Financial Services, International Journal of Indian culture, Business and management

He teaches Courses on Financial Reporting and Analysis, Corporate Finance and Management Accounting, Risk Management, Commercial Bank Management, Corporate Valuation, Project Finance and Financing Start ups

Education

He is a PhD from Birla Institute of technology & Science. BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan and MBA from Faculty of Management Studies, Lucknow University, Lucknow. He is a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Harcourt Butler Technological University (HBTU), Kanpur. He became a Harvard affiliate in 2014 when he went to attend the Global Colloquium on Participant Centered Learning at Harvard Business School, Boston.

Consulting

Dr. Singh has done extensive consulting with various organizations of repute consulting them on turn around and process optimization strategies. Some of the notable recent ones were:

  • Working with Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO): Part of the team which is working on a developing a Credit Scoring model for HUDCO so that they can better capture Probabilities of Default.
  • Worked on a Consulting Project with NABARD on “Estimating transaction Cost of SHG Clients- in a Bank Linkage Model and the MFI Model”, 2016.
  • Worked on a Consulting Project with Indian Army (Contract Negotiation Cell) in developing “Negotiation Strategies for Benchmarking procurement of Defence Equipment’s and weapons”.
  • Worked on a turnaround strategy Consulting for Pradeshik Cooperative Dairy Federation (PCDF): worked on a modernization plan and road map for ailing Milk Unions in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Worked with Pradeshik Industrial & Investment Corporation of Uttar Pradesh Limited (PICUP): Part of the team that is working on settlement of Non Performing Accounts of the financial institution. PICUP today is a sick company, referred to BIFR and has huge block of defaulters whom they want to settle with; their outstanding positions in a process which is called one-time settlement (OTS).

Awards & Honours

  • He has won the prestigious Macro Research award from IIBF and is working on project on “Ethics and Governance in Indian Banks – Do they affect Bank Valuation”.
  • He was awarded a Research Project from Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Reserve Bank of India on estimating the transactions costs of the Alternative models of Financial Inclusion through the Microfinance Model in India.
  • He has won Research award from IIBF to work on a Project titled “Regulation and Valuation of Microfinance Institutions- proposing a regulatory framework
