Paul Ma is an assistant professor of accounting at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University in 2013, where he was the recipient of the Carl M. and Carolyn C. Franklin Graduate Fellowship. Prior to attending Stanford he received his BA in economics from the University of Chicago, and won the D. Gale Johnson Memorial Prize for outstanding undergraduate thesis in economics. 

His primary research interest lies in the economics of information with emphasis on understanding a) why and how often public firms voluntarily disclose (or strategically withhold) information in their financial reporting or product quality disclosures b) the differences in the informational content of disclosure under mandatory versus voluntary reporting regimes and c) measurement issues in performance attribution and its implications for incentive contracting. 

Ma''s work has been published in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of American Medical Association: Internal Medicine and cited in national media. 

In the past, he has consulted for the Securities and Exchange Commission and worked as a high frequency trading analyst.
