P K Johnny Wong

Professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University, School of Microelectronics

Biography

Academic Achievements

Prof. Wong has over 15 years of research experience in Hybrid Spintronics and Artificial Materials. Before moving to the mainland of China, he was a senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Advanced 2D Materials (2014-2020), where he worked with Prof. Andrew Wee and pioneered the molecular beam epitaxy and surface characterization of 2D vanadium dichalcogenides (Adv. Mater. 31, 1901185; ACS Nano 13, 12894 (2019)). He successfully established atomic-scale doping and non-covalent molecular adsorption to tune the 2D properties of those magnetic monolayers (ACS Nano 13, 8997; ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 11, 43789 (2019); Appl. Mater. Today 18, 100535 (2020)). He was previously a postdoc at the NanoElectronics Group of MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology in the University of Twente, the Netherlands (2009-2014). There, he set up jointly with Prof. Michel de Jong the world’s first all in-situ system for device-level fabrication and characterization of organic/ferromagnetic spinterfaces. He was the first to report the observations of magnetic orbital hybridization and induced charge rebalancing effects at the C60 spinterfaces with Fe and Fe3O4 ultrathin films (Org. Electron. 14, 451; J. Mater. Chem. C 1, 1197 (2013); Org. Electron. 29, 39 (2016)). He received a PhD in Electronics (2010) from the University of York, UK, for his thesis on hybrid spintronic structure for electrical spin injection, that integrated magnetic ultrathin films with III-V and -nitride semiconductors (IEEE Trans. Magn. 44, 2640 (2008); Phys. Rev. B 81, 035419 (2010); Sci. Rep. 6, 29845 (2016); Prog. Mater. Sci. 99, 27 (2019)). He obtained his BSc in Engineering Physics from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2004).

He has actively participated in major project grants funded by FOM (NL), EU, Singapore NRF, MOE, NSFC, etc. with a total value >100M yuan. As PI, he currently manages 2 grants (~2M yuan) and has completed 10+ projects granted for the access to major synchrotron radiation infrastructures around the world (ALS, MAX-Lab, Elettra, DLS, etc). He has published 19 referred articles out of 57 in total, in which he is the first/corresponding author. These include Adv. Mater., Prog. Mater. Sci., ACS Nano, and so on. He is the recipient of the highly prestigious Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (2014), Shaanxi High-level Overseas Talent Programme (2020), “Ao Xiang” Overseas Scholar (2020), and IAAM Innovation Award (2020). He sits on the international review panel of the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) since 2018, and serves as reviewer for many top-tier journals, such as Adv. Mater., ACS Nano, ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, Appl. Phys. Lett., etc. He is currently on the Editorial Advisory Board for Heliyon, an all-science, open-access journal under the Cell Press family, and Research Topic Guest Editor for Frontiers in Nanotechnology.
