SDA Bocconi School of Management
Ciani Oriana is an Associate Professor of Practice, Public Management and Policy Group, Health Economics & HTA (Health Technology Assessment) at SDA Bocconi School of Management.
Her collaboration with SDA Bocconi began in 2010. She leads the Epidemiology and Issues in the Public Health module for the Master of International Health Care Management, Economics and Politics (MIHMEP) at SDA Bocconi. She has taught in numerous executive courses and has been involved in several educational activities targeting professionals in the Healthcare industry.
Her research interests are centred around the use and impact of (HTA) on decision-making in healthcare, on the methodological aspects of the evaluation of health technologies, particularly medical devices, and on the use of evidence synthesis techniques to inform policy decisions and health policies. She is also a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter Medical School (UK) where she received her PhD with a thesis focusing on the evaluation of surrogate endpoints in HTA, which remains one of her main research topics. Oriana has been involved in many national and international research projects, often involving coordination among several partners, such as MedTecHTA (FP7 no. 305694), Mapping NCD (FP7 no. 602536) and, more recently, COMED (H2020 no.779306).
Oriana is a 2020 Fulbright Research Scholar at Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Public Health. She is the author of several publications in HTA, health economics and health services research and a reviewer for many international academic journals. She is a member of the Early Career Committee of the European Health Economics Association (EuHEA), a member of HTAi (Health Technology Assessment International), of the International Association of Health Economics (iHEA), of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), of the Italian Association of Health Economics (AIES), of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and of the Italian Association of Clinical Engineers (AIIC). Her paper published in the International Journal of Health Technology Assessment (2015) on HTA practices for Medical Devices received the 2016 Egon Jonsson Award. She also received recognition for Outstanding impact in Health and Wellbeing at the Exeter Impact Award Event (2013), Best Student Podium Presentation Award at the 16th ISPOR Annual European Meeting in Dublin (2013) and the Young Researchers Award at 15th AIES Conference (2010).
Oriana holds an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and an MSc in Healthcare Management and Economics from SDA Bocconi. She received her PhD from the Peninsula Technology Assessment Group (PenTAG), University of Exeter Medical School (UK).
