Niels Walet

Biography

Niels Walet is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the university of Manchester.

Niels obtained his undergraduate degree ("doctoraal examen", leading to the rather specific Dutch title of "Drs") in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Utrecht. He then specialised in theoretical nuclear physics and obtained a doctorate in this area, again from the University of Utrecht.. Subsequently he worked as a researcher in Amsterdam (NL), Philadelphia (USA) and Erlangen (D), before coming to UMIST in Manchester as a lecturer. Here he progressed through the ranks to become senior lecturer, reader and professor.

Apart from his research interests in the theory  of and computational approaches in Nuclear and adjacent areas of Particle and Condensed Matter Physics, Niels has a keen interest in teaching and learning. He has led a number of successful projects in the School, and also contributes to Open Educational Resources. With his keen interest in computing, he has contributed to e-learning resources using simulations in Java and Mathematica.
