Biography

Aalto University School of Business

Hey there! I have recently started as a Visiting Assistant Professor (Design Business Management) at Aalto University (a joint position in BIZ and ARTS), although I am still currently based in Tokyo (Assistant Professor @ the University of Tokyo's multidisciplinary unit i.school). Commuting between Helsinki and Tokyo might not be the easiest thing to do, but I love my job! In May 2014, I successfully defended my dissertation titled Visual knowing and visualizing knowledge in knowledge-intensive organizations". Located at the crossroad between organization and design studies, my goal is to bring visual communication back to the organization's core from its peripheries. In addition, previously I have worked in IDBM's FLUID research project as a Project Manager (August 2012 - July 2014). In FLUID we looked at creative industries in Helsinki, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. As one of the final outcomes we released two books (published by Talentum): Pelisilmää, sävelkorvaa and The Playing Finn. Also available as an e-book from Amazon and various Finnish vendors! Please get in touch with me if you want to know more about creative industries, game companies, visual knowledge, Japan, or design-intensive companies. Always open for discussing new opportunities for collaboration! :)

BACKGROUND

Currently I am working in Japan as an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo's multidisciplinary unit called i.school. Slowly making my comeback to Helsinki, so expect to see more of me in the city this autumn! In short: my academic journey started in political science, and in international relations, to be more precise. I thought - and still think - it is cool, but the academic staff in my department seemed to be too much detached from 'the real world' (in a bad way), which is why I started to pursue another degree at the business school. After getting my B.Sc. in international business, I switched both the academic institution and major. I wanted to know more about communication, which is why I took an M.Sc. degree in international business communication, and afterwards I switched back to international business to pursue a PhD. Sounds confusing? Well, I like to keep things in motion. Keeps me sane :-) In addition to my academic background, I've worked as a management consultant and as a trainee at the Finnish embassy in Tokyo, Japan. I was this close to starting a career at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, but then I realized academia is my place.
