Biography

Harvard Graduate School of Design

The practice Maurizio Travaglini co-founded in 2003--Architects of Group Genius--is focused on co-design, a topic that lies within the blurred boundaries of innovation, learning, change, and collaboration. In the past 10 years, Maurizio has designed and facilitated over 200 collaborative working sessions in different countries and cultures to address a variety of problems: from conceiving, designing, and launching new products, services, or policies to strategy formulation; from leadership development to individual and group learning. His approach to co-design comes from a very unorthodox perspective on the architecture of collaboration. This perspective is based on the way the physical architecture, as well as the process, social and content architectures, interact with one another.

Maurizio’s clients include CEOs and Board Members of some of the most admired organizations in the world. Before founding Architects Of Group Genius, Maurizio spent 15 years working in six different countries using the four languages he speaks for Nokia, J.P. Morgan, and Accenture--he also served as Director of the World Economic Forum Davos Annual Meeting Program. His international experience is reflected in the range of projects that have taken his practice across 20 countries in Europe, the United States, China, Australia, and the Middle East.

He holds a degree in Economics and Business Management from Bocconi University in Milan. He is the co-author of the article: “Unlocking the Slices of Genius in Your Organization,” part of the HBS Centennial publication Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice.

Maurizio practices as a consultant in a space located within the blurred boundaries of innovation, change, learning, collaboration and co-design. He works together with his team, Architects Of Group Genius, to create the space for communities, organizations, individuals to identify and define their most critical challenges – and to develop new strategies and approaches to confront them, survive, thrive. The purpose of his work is to augment the individual and the collective capacity to deal with complex, systemic, adaptive challenges, and to create the context for people to do their best work and develop themselves as leaders. Maurizio has conceived, designed, led and facilitated over three hundred projects on five continents, for some of the most admired corporations, universities, and not-for-profit organizations in the world.

Maurizio serves as Adjunct Professor of Leadership and Innovation at the École des Ponts Business School in Paris and as a member of the Faculty Team of the “Leading and Building a Culture of Innovation” program at Harvard Business School. He also taught in the Executive Education department of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD), serving as Academic Lead for the “Leadership and Design Thinking” program and the “IndyProject” program. In 2016, Maurizio was invited to the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos as a Forum Fellow.

Maurizio is co-author of the article “Unlocking the Slices of Genius in Your Organization,” published on the HBS Centennial publication Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice (2010). The article was co-written with Professor Linda Hill (Harvard Business School), Greg Brandeau (CIO of Pixar Animation Studios), and Emily Stecker (HBS).

Before founding his practice, Maurizio served as director for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. He spent over a decade in management and consulting roles for global organizations like Nokia, J.P. Morgan, and Accenture.
