Biography

Aalto University School of Business

I teach courses in Moral and Political Philosophy. My current research projects include Synthetic Biology and Ethics, funded during 2013-2017 within the Academy of Finland's research programme FinSynBio, and Justice and Its Alternatives in a Globalising World, funded during 2015-2016 by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Find out more about my research at the Orcid Research Base. In an outside-the-box project I study the possibility of using my rock opera Playing God on the ethics of genetics as a bioethics and business ethics education tool.

BACKGROUND

I earned my doctorate in Practical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki in 1991, and worked as Lecturer and Research Fellow in Helsinki since 1985 until I was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kuopio in 1999. I then moved to the North West of England, where I was first Professor of Moral Philosophy and Head of Centre for Professional Ethics at the University of Central Lancashire (2001–2004) and then Professor of Bioethics and Philosophy of Law at the University of Manchester (2004–2013). My research in the history, theory, and applications of moral, social, and political philosophy has produced, to date, 14 authored books, 17 edited works, and 233 articles and book chapters in international and national journals and series. One of my areas of specialization has been bioethics. In 2007 I founded, at the University of Manchester, the pioneering Doctoral Programme in Bioethics and Medical Jurisprudence; and during 2001–2009 I served in the International Association of Bioethics Board of Directors, the last two years as the Association’s President.
